Issue

You go through the process of installing ConstructConnect Takeoff it is working fine then:

  • You sign into your machine the next day
  • You sign into your machine as someone else
  • You restart your computer

...and ConstructConnect Takeoff has uninstalled itself!

What is going on???

Discussion

ConstructConnect Takeoff uses a "ClickOnce" installer designed to ensure:

  • the program can be installed by almost any user on a computer (regardless of their security rights/role)
  • the program keeps itself updated automatically
  • only required components are downloaded during installation

One thing a little different about ConstructConnect Takeoff's installation compared to other Windows programs is that it installs to the current Windows user's personal directory (C:\Users\<user name>\) not in Program Files (x86). This is how many applications from the Windows Store are installed so they can keep themselves updated. Another benefit is that the user doesn't need to be an Admin on their computer to install run or update the program.

A side effect of using Click-Once installers is that if for example "Joseph" installs ConstructConnect Takeoff on a computer and then "Sharon" comes along and signs into Windows (with her own User Name) she must install ConstructConnect Takeoff under her profile. There is no way to install ConstrutConnect Takeoff for 'all users' unless they all log into the machine using the same credentials (which is not recommended and likely violates your IT department's guidelines/rules).

This also means that if your IT department has 'frozen' your computer meaning it largely resets all files after a reboot or logout/in you will have to install ConstructConnect Takeoff every time the machine restarts.

Resolution

If ConstructConnect Takeoff is not remaining installed for you coordinate with your IT department/person. He or she will need to "unfreeze", "thaw", or "unlock" your computer or your User Folder "C:\Users<user name>\AppData\Local\Apps\2.0\" so you can install ConstructConnect Takeoff and any subsequent updates and not have that installation wiped out during a reboot/restart.
