Crosshairs indicate the cursor position on the Image Window while performing takeoff. The option to switch between the two crosshair modes is under Tools > Options. Check or uncheck "Use full-window crosshairs for mouse takeoff".

Using Full Crosshairs can make it easier to follow the cursor on the Image Window.

(The yellow boxes are added just to show you where the crosshairs are.)

When using a digitizer, full crosshairs are automatically enabled.

You can also set the color and thickness of full-sized crosshairs. See Program Options - General Tab (Adjusting How You Work with OST) for more information.
